Mark Parkinson focuses on a demographic trend that is not discussed much: the projections for a dramatic drop in the number of young people in our country.

Mark Parkinson wants to keep you one step ahead of the curve on issues and trends affecting the long-term care sector, notably in the area of demographics and what providers should know about not only the aging U.S. population, but also a shocking second trend: projections for a dramatic drop in the number of young people in our country.

In a video explaining what this will mean for the sector, Parkinson lays out the pitfalls resulting from a lack of young people and offers hope for meeting the challenges.

“We know that the growth of the older population is occurring. As we sit here today, there are 14 million people in the United States over the age of 80. The oldest baby boomers will turn 80 next year. As a result, that number increases dramatically five years from now. We go from 14 million to 18 million. Five years after that there will be 23 million. Five years after that will be 27 million,” he says in the video.

Unfortunately, the number of younger people is declining.

“Nationwide, the birth rate is dropping dramatically and as a result, the number of younger people is declining,” Parkinson. “Why does this matter to you? It matters to you because the people that work in our buildings are young. People that we take care of are old. We're going to have a ton of people to take care of.”
