In a newly posted video in the Park View section of Park Place Live, Mark Parkinson reveals that his favorite type of building configuration and resident mix is one championed by Trilogy Health Services in their CCRC model with skilled nursing as the focal point.

Even though many types of buildings can help a provider thrive in its given market, the different kind of CCRCs operated by Trilogy have proven to be a clinical, financial, and community success, with skilled beds predominant and independent living and assisted living beds in a more limited role.

“There are all sorts of different concepts, whether it's stand-alone assisted living, stand-alone dementia, stand-alone skilled…you name it,” Parkinson said. “If it's put together well and it's in the right market and people know what they're doing, almost everything has worked.”

Of all the concepts in play, he pointed to the aforementioned CCRC model from Trilogy as the one that intrigues him most and explains how the Trilogy product developed by Randy Bufford (company founder) and Leigh Ann Barney (CEO) turns traditional thinking upside down.

Randy Bufford had this great idea about 30 years ago that you could build a CCRC where the SNFs were the main component of the CCRC. Historically, CCRCs have been large numbers of independent living rooms, maybe a little bit of assisted living, and then a teeny amount, maybe 30 beds of skilled nursing,” Parkinson said.

“Randy had a much different idea. His idea was let's make skilled nursing the center part of the facility, and then have a little bit of IL and a little bit of AL.”

The brainstorm works to bring synergy to the building configurations, the financial performance of the CCRC, and the census/clinical/operational structure.
