In the first few weeks of our deep dive on Illinois, the news has not been as bad as I expected. Illinois’s reputation as the worst state in the country to operate a nursing home in was at risk, or so I thought.

In the first few weeks of our deep dive on Illinois, the news has not been as bad as I expected. Illinois’s reputation as the worst state in the country to operate a nursing home in was at risk, or so I thought.


Unfortunately, when it comes to reimbursement, the news is not great. While it’s not the worst in the country, it’s bad.


Marc Zimmet, president and CEO of Zimmet Healthcare Services Group, has developed a set of objective criteria to evaluate and grade every state’s reimbursement. He looks at the key criteria that matter and grades every state from A to D. In addition, he has a subgrade that reflects the fluctuations within the state.


Check out my interview with Marc where he explains his system and reveals his grade for Illinois. It’s not good.


While the grade may not justify labeling Illinois as the worst state in the country to operate a nursing home, it’s very hard to make the economics work.
