In this video, Michele Mongillo, senior clinical director, First Quality, talks with Mark Parkinson about the three essentials of a great incontinence program.

To run an effective incontinence program, protective hygiene products are just one part of the equation. In this video, Michele Mongillo, senior clinical director, First Quality, talks with Mark Parkinson about the underlying factors that can help support clinical performance.

She describes how some 70 percent of skilled nursing facility residents could have incontinence, which if not managed properly can have a big impact on survey outcomes and other quality measures. This is because residents with incontinence are at higher risk for falls, skin breakdown, infection, nutritional decline, and even mental health issues, Mongillo said.

First Quality is a leading manufacturer of everyday essentials for personal and household care, including Prevail incontinence products.

Drawing on over 30 years of experience as a nurse, nursing educator and clinical director, Mongillo highlights three vital components to an effective incontinence program.

“I think that oftentimes people think it's all about products, and products are really just one important part of the puzzle,” she said. “So, it really is your people that are managing it and leading it within the facility. It's educational programs that that you're receiving, and then it's the products and really having a high-quality, high-absorbency product.”
