CMS Extends Recoupment Date for Part A Overpayments

CMS is extending the Healthcare Integrated General Ledger Accounting System default recoupment date for Part A cost report overpayments from 16 to 41 calendar days after the demand date.
In an MLN Matters update, CMS said it is extending the Healthcare Integrated General Ledger Accounting System default recoupment date for Part A cost report overpayments from 16 to 41 calendar days after the demand date.
“This change more closely aligns with the schedule for other recoupments, such as Part A and Medicare Part B claim overpayments, which start on day 41. We expect this change to reduce the financial burden of administrative processes in the Medicare Program that increase costs and reduce efficiency,” CMS said.
The changes are effective Jan. 4, 2027.
“If you don’t repay an overpayment in full by day 40, we start overpayment recoupment, subject to provisions found in section 935(f)(2) of the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement, and Modernization Act of 2003, unless the overpayment is an excluded category, such as:
• Extended repayment schedule request
• Approved ERS
• Appeal
• Bankruptcy,” CMS said.
The notice applies to home health agencies, hospices, hospitals, SNF, and other providers billing Medicare Administrative Contractors for Medicare Part A services.
