SNFs Piling on the Jobs, Add 3,200 in July: BLS

BLS said the hiring picture for SNFs continues to buck the national trend, with the sector adding 3,200 jobs in July while the rest of the economy saw an unexpected 23,000 job decline.
A shockingly bad July national employment report that saw the economy lose 23,000 jobs but did nothing to deter the continued strength in hiring in the skilled nursing sector. For last month, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) said SNFs added 3,200 jobs to put the number employed in the sector at another new pre-pandemic high of 1,592,900 jobs.
The disappointing national report saw Wall Street expectations for modest jobs gains of around 80,000 jobs in July crumble when the BLS data showed a loss instead. July’s non-farm payrolls report recorded a drop of 23,000, while economists polled by Dow Jones had forecasted a gain of 83,000. The unemployment rate fell to 4.1 percent from 4.2 percent, showing a decline as fewer people actively looked for full-time work, CNBC said.
The rosy hiring picture for SNFs was even better when accounting for adjustments to the June numbers.
The raw number of those employed in SNFs in July was 1,592,900 vs. 1,589,700 in June. That new June number, BLS said, is 3,100 jobs higher than reported last month when the raw number was 1,586,600 employed.
Yearly comparisons have SNF employment 40,400 jobs higher in July 2026 than in July 2025 when 1,552,500 people worked for facilities, BLS said.
All numbers are seasonally adjusted.
